Overview
Qatar has set up Qatar Visa Centers (QVCs) in India and five other countries. The Government Communications Office says they were created to speed up recruitment and to make sure workers are not exploited in their home countries.
The employer obtains the work visa approval in Qatar. The Ministry of Labour runs an electronic service that grants work visa approvals automatically to companies that comply with the Labour Law.
After arrival, the work visa is followed by a residence permit. Entry on a visit or tourist visa does not authorise employment.
Work routes
| Route | Who it is for | Job offer or sponsor needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Work visa and work residence permit | Employees hired by a company or employer in Qatar | Yes. The employer applies in Qatar |
| Family residence | Family members of a resident worker | Sponsored by the resident, under Ministry of Interior conditions |
Qatar’s Ministry of Labour also publishes a Labour Classification Guide that standardises occupations for residency and work permits across the private sector.
Eligibility
Work visa
- An employment contract between you and the employer.
- A medical test passed outside Qatar, to the standard the authorities set.
- Educational certificates for the profession, attested.
- A good conduct certificate (police clearance certificate) from India, attested by the Qatar Embassy.
Job offer and sponsorship
You need a job offer first. Only an employer in Qatar can obtain the work visa approval, and the contract between you and that employer is one of the required documents.
There is no route for arriving first and looking for work: a visit visa does not allow employment.
Who does what
Work visa applications fail most often when it is unclear who is responsible for which step. This is how the duties are split.
What the employer does
- Obtain the work visa approval in Qatar through the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Interior services.
- Issue the employment contract.
- Complete your residence permit after you arrive.
What you do
- Attend the Qatar Visa Center in India for the pre-departure formalities.
- Pass the medical test.
- Provide attested educational certificates and a police clearance certificate.
- Read the contract before you sign it.
- For ECR passports: get emigration clearance in India before departure.
Documents

Family and job changes
Dependants
Family members of a resident can be sponsored under Ministry of Interior conditions. We did not confirm the current salary or housing conditions, so check with the Ministry of Interior before you apply.
Changing employers
Qatar has reformed its labour rules in recent years; the Government Communications Office publishes a summary. We did not confirm the current procedure for changing employers, so check the Ministry of Labour’s services before you resign.
Common mistakes
- Travelling on a visit visa to take up a job.
- Skipping attestation of educational certificates or the police clearance certificate.
- Signing a contract you have not read, or one that differs from the offer.
- Paying unofficial fees to agents for a visa.
- Leaving India without emigration clearance when your passport has an ECR endorsement.
- Using an agent who is not a registered recruiting agent in India.
How we can help
My Visa Assistance provides visa information, document checklists and application support. For a work visa or permit, that means:
- An assessment call to identify which route fits your job offer and profile.
- A personalised document checklist for that route.
- Help completing the application forms and booking appointments.
- A review of your file before you submit it.
What we do not do: we are not a recruitment agency or a registered recruiting agent, we do not arrange jobs or employer sponsorship, and we cannot guarantee approval. Decisions are made only by the government authorities.
