Overview
The work permit is the labour authority’s approval for a private employer to hire you. Kuwait Government Online lists the entry visa as a Ministry of Interior service that requires the work permit.
After arrival, employees in the private (civil) sector obtain a residence permit under Article 18 of the residence regulations. The work permit, the entry visa and the residence permit are three separate documents.
A visit visa does not authorise employment.
Work routes
| Route | Who it is for | Job offer or sponsor needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Private-sector work: work permit, entry visa and Article 18 residence | Employees of private companies | Yes. The sponsor applies |
| Work visa for a private contract | Listed separately by Kuwait Government Online | Yes |

Government-sector employment follows a different residence article. This guide covers private-sector work.
Eligibility
Entry visa to work in the private sector

Job offer and sponsorship
A job offer from a Kuwaiti employer is required. The employer is your sponsor and its authorised signatory signs the visa and security forms, together with a sponsor’s declaration and undertaking.
The labour authority checks that the job description matches the activity the company practises, and asks for an educational certificate for roles that need one.
